You have the shiny bling on your finger and you’re about to kickstart your wedding day plans, how exciting for you!

Wedding planning is a lot of fun, however, it’s normal to get a little daunted with seemingly endless decisions to make. So let’s take the hassle out of choosing a photographer, whether you’re right here with me on Queensland’s beautiful Sunshine Coast or in search of a photographer somewhere else in the world, here are 4 questions to ask your wedding photographer before you book.

1. Are you available on my wedding day?

You’ve picked a date for your wedding & created a shortlist of potential photographers now is the time to send through enquiries to see who’s available to photograph your big day. Conveniently most photographers will include this question on their website enquiry form.

If your favourite photographer is unavailable, ask if there’s another photographer they’d recommend who shoots a similar style. Experienced wedding photographers will have built up a community of local creatives they’ve worked with and can often recommend talented vendors that you may not be familiar with.

2.Will YOU be photographing my wedding?

It’s fair to assume that when you book a photographer they’re going to show up, right? Well no actually, it’s not unheard of for wedding photographers to send someone else in their place.

If a photographer has an existing booking on your wedding date they may send an associate photographer to cover your wedding. Hence it’s a good idea to ask your prospective photographer if they themselves will be shooting your special day.

As a rule I NEVER double book any couple’s wedding! When you book me as your wedding photographer you can rest assured that I (me, not an associate) will arrive as preparations are getting underway to capture every moment of your special day from start to finish.

3. What experience do you have photographing weddings?

Let’s be real not all photographers are created equal, some come with years of valuable experience photographing weddings.

Trust me on this day, your day, you want a photographer by your side that understands the unpredictable dynamics of a wedding day! A seasoned pro who will guide you through the process of being photographed and can engage even the most camera-shy bride or groom.

You want to find a photographer whose local knowledge rivals any Uber driver or instameet host to get you to the best locations right when the magic hour light appears. Someone who can navigate family interactions & coordinate the seemingly impossible group pictures with ease (aka a professional cat herder).

With so many moving parts on any wedding day, it is essential to have someone that can easily navigate through these motions + nail those killer shots!

4. How long will it take to receive my photographs?

The average turnaround time is between 4-8 weeks for any wedding. Why so long? Popular photographers will have several weddings in the editing pipeline before they photograph your special day & no one loves a queue jumper + the process to edit your wedding images takes time to ensure they look PERFECT!

I understand how excited you are to receive your images – really, I do! – so I’ll send a few cheeky edits shortly after your wedding day to share those swoon-worthy shots with eager friends and family.

In the end, you should choose a photographer whose style you love, a personality you click with, and professionalism you respect.
